In the past when organized tourism did not exist and the demand for accommodation out of town was rare, the only travelers were the tea planters of the colonial period, high-ranking government officials and the occasional tourist. In those days Rest Houses provided comfortable stayovers and delicious food for such travelers.
These guest houses and rest houses were generally built in a scenic location of the town, village or hamlet. Today most of them are still maintained and functional. Such accommodation could be exciting, nostalgic or even romantic.
