KANDY PERAHERA - (ESALA PERAHERA) 17th August 2008 to 17th August 2008 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| As the August moon waxes the town of Kandy is taken over by an event that has been happening every year since about 300 AD.
It’s the week-long pageant known as the Perahera (parade) which is performed to invoke the blessings and give thanks to the gods for the rains that will help grow the crops, fertility and good health. This festival is a synthesis of Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. The procession includes brilliantly-decorated elephants, fire-juggling acrobats, traditional dancers and musicians, colourful banners and palanquins, whip crackers, torch bearers and thousands of barefoot pilgrims and swordsmen. |

A majestic tusker carries the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha inside a golden casket through the city streets of this ancient capital. This treasured item was brought to Sri Lanka in the third century AD, and thousands flock to the Dalada Maligawa to catch a glimpse of it.The action is made even more mesmerizing because it happens at night. The old cannon booms after dusk and the Perahera take to the streets and grows ever longer each night until the final night of pageantry, when the parade is at its finest. .Remember it all happens from 07th August to 17 August 2008. |
